KA1 “The Truth Behind the Headlines” organized by PROJUVEN in Benalmádena, Spain

In early November 2023, a great KA1 training course titled “The Truth Behind the Headlines” (TTBH) took place in Benalmádena, Spain, marking a significant stride in the battle against misinformation. This project, which ran from the 3rd to the 10th of November, brought together 28 passionate youth workers from seven different countries, all united by a common goal: to empower young individuals as informed and active citizens in today’s rapidly changing information landscape.

The TTBH program was designed with the aim to exchange experiences and best practices among youth workers, preparing them to combat the pervasive issue of fake news and its detrimental effects on young people. By enhancing critical thinking skills and fostering a sense of cultural understanding and mutual respect, the project sought to prepare youth workers to educate and empower the next generation.

Utilizing non-formal learning methodologies, the training course embraced a variety of interactive activities. From ice breakers and energizers to group discussions, case studies, creative presentations, simulations, and debates, the program ensured that participants gained practical skills and insights. This hands-on approach was instrumental in equipping youth workers with the necessary knowledge and tools to fight misinformation and empower young people with critical thinking abilities.

A key component of the training was the in-depth exploration of fake news and misinformation in each partner country, including Denmark, Romania, Italy, Bulgaria, Belgium, Estonia, and Spain. Participants, divided into international teams, conducted comprehensive research to understand the unique challenges faced by their respective countries. Through their collaborative efforts, they formulated valuable recommendations on how young people can effectively distinguish and navigate through the maze of misleading information.

Additionally, discussions on topics such as the impact of fake news on the stock market provided insights into the far-reaching consequences of misinformation and underscored the importance of accuracy in information.

The TTBH training course was not only an educational experience but also an opportunity for cultural exchange. Participants shared their unique cultures, captivating traditions, and vibrant dances during an intercultural night, bridging cultural differences and bringing everyone closer together.

The training concluded with participants receiving their well-deserved Youthpass certificates, symbolizing their readiness and enhanced capabilities to make a positive impact in their communities. The energy, collaboration, and enthusiasm that filled each day of the program were palpable, as captured in snapshots of youth workers in action.
